Your body is under attack! All around you are pathogens that can cause disease. But don’t panic – your immune system works day and night to defend you. It changes throughout life, getting stronger from birth to adulthood but, as we go beyond middle age, its ability to adapt and fight pathogens reduces.
Research at the Babraham Institute increases our understanding of how our immune system changes throughout our lives. A greater understanding of infections and non-infectious diseases is used by those working to improve vaccines, combat autoimmune diseases and develop anti-tumour therapies.
Advances in medicine and public health mean that people are living for longer. However, a significant
proportion of that increased lifespan is spent in a prolonged state of declining health and wellbeing.
The principle aims of the BBSRC Bioscience for Health Vision are to achieve a greater understanding of
healthy human systems across the life-course by revealing the biological mechanisms underlying normal
physiology and homeostatic control, and to promote effective translation of basic bioscience to enable
people to live healthier lives for longer, and to support innovation across a wide range of
health-relevant UK industrial sectors.
